A Report about Dr. Saeed Madani’s Situation in Rajai Shahr Prison

HRANA News Agency – Doctor Saeed Madani, sociologist and senior researcher in the social sciences, is spending the fourth year of his sentence in Rajai Shahr prison.
According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), Doctor Saeed Madani has been sentenced to 9 and a half years imprisonment for two cases and by including his previous detention time, he has spent about 5 years of his sentence.
Saeed Madani Ghahfarokhi, PhD in criminology from the University of the Pacific Saturn America, was arrested last time in January 2011 and was under investigation for about a year in ward 209 of Evin prison and then he was transferred to ward 350 of Evin prison and was sentenced by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, presided by Judge Pir Abbasi, to 6 years imprisonment in exile and 10 years mandatory residence in Bandar Abbas. This sentence was just reduced to 6 years imprisonment and 10 years mandatory residence in Bandar Abbas by Branch 54 of the Appeal Court, according to this decision, 4 years of the imprisonment must be tolerated in Bandar Abbas prison, and after finalizing the sentence, he was exiled to Rajai Shahr prison, in Karaj.
Membership and cooperation with the Center for Defense of Human Rights, the establishment and membership of the Committee of Arbitrary Detention, the establishment and membership of the Committee to Defense of Freedom and Fair Elections, the establishment of the Council of Nationalist-Religious Activists, publishing numerous critical articles about the regime, collaboration with the Coordination Council of the Green Path Party and numerous articles to support the Green Movement, are part of the activities because of which he has been senenced.
Doctor Madani had been arrested twice, prior to the recent arrest in 1994 when he was Editor of “Iran e Farda” magazine and Mr Ezatullah Sahabi was the director, and also in 2000 on charge of establishment, membership and partnership with the nationalist-religious activists.
The first time that this nationalist-religious activist was detained in 1994 because of his editorial responsibility of “Iran e Farda” and his critical articles. One of the most recent one of these articles was a critique of Iran’s strategy in the war with Iraq. He said in an article that “the war after the conquest of Khoram Shahr city and after reclaiming occupied lands of Iran, was a strategic error by Iran’s Clergymen and Military”, and so that he was interrogated in solitary confinement for two months in Tohid prison, the former “Joint Anti-Terrorist Committee”.
Saeed Madani was arrested for the second time in 2000 by the Revolutionary Guards and along with a group of members of the nationalist-religious activists because of political and press activities and was released after one year, after being kept for 6 months in solitary confinement.
Following this case, he was sentenced in 2003 to 6 years imprisonment and 10 years of social exclusion by an order from judge Haddad, one of the responsible authorities of Kahrizak detention center, but his sentence was changed to 3 years imprisonment and 10 years of social exclusion in Branch 29 of the Appeal Court, presided by Judge Zargar.
In accordance with the provisions of this total sentences, this sociologist should tolerate the continuation of four years imprisonment in Bandar Abbas and after being released also he should stay in Bandar Abbas for 10-year in exile and for 10 years subject to social exclusion, even though most of the convictions will not be applicable, under the new Penal Code.
Doctor Saeed Madani as a criminologist and social researcher, has published many articles and books in the field of addiction, violence against children and women, children’s rights and other social issues.
